“Nothing is too big or too great to overcome.”
Those are the words that Vredenburg mouth painter Heiron Joseph Nel uses to describe how he overcame a life changing diving accident, which left him in a wheelchair in 2006.
During his rehabilitation period Heiron attended an art class and discovered the joy that painting brought to him. As a quadriplegic Heiron has almost no mobility in his hands or arms so he has had learn to manoeuvre a paintbrush with his mouth. He has gone on to produce many remarkable works of art, which are known for their colourful and vibrant style.
Since mastering his skill he has over the years received multiple commissions for his work and can be proud to say that has paintings are displayed in the M&C SAATCHI ABEL Collection.
I know from my own journey, that that life isn’t always easy, but there are people who, no matter their circumstances, find a way to stay positive and to achieve their goals. Heiron personifies this.
Inspired by his positive outlook, I commissioned a painting for AR Jones Engineering earlier this year and took delivery of it in October 2019. The oil painting depicts the AR Jones Engineering team and one of our team using the cutting torch – as this process lends well to capturing it on canvas.
The painting will take centre stage in the AR Jones Engineering boardroom when we move into our new workshop premises in the SBIDZ in 2020.
